Laser Therapy or Photobiomodulation

At Friendly Smiles Dental we use Class 3b low-level laser (LLLT) as a modality to treat several dental and TMD problems. Low-level laser therapy is the application of light LED aimed to promote tissue repair, reduce inflammation and induce analgesia. LLLT has been widely researched and subject to systemic reviews for a range of musculoskeletal conditions including in TMD patients with positive outcomes. These articles are reported by The Lancet, Clinical Evidence, the International Association for the Study of Pain, and the World Health Organization. The four main clinical targets of LLLT are:

  1. Site of injury to promote healing and remodeling

  2. Lymph nodes to help reduce oedema and inflammation

  3. Neural pathways to induce analgesia

  4. Trigger points to reduce tenderness and pain

LLLT is commonly used in physiotherapy. We are now very excited to be able to use LLLT in addition to our alternative TMD therapy to provide pain relief and aid in tissue healing. At Friendly Smiles Dental both our dentist and TMJ physiotherapist have attended additional courses to be able to utilize LLLT on our patients safely!
