Safe Amalgam Filling Removal

Amalgam fillings also referred to as “silver amalgam” have been used by dentists to restore cavities in the past. Unfortunately, this Amalgam restoration consists of several toxic metals including mercury.

At Friendly Smiles Dental, we take mercury restoration with precautions. Research suggests that inhalation of mercury vapor can produce harmful effects on the nervous, digestive, immune, respiratory, and renal systems. At Friendly Smiles Dental our clinical rooms are intentionally designed to avoid mercury inhalation.

Prior to mercury removal, we suggest a detoxification program as recommended by your health professional and our specialist dentists to help in the mercury-free detoxification process. We also provide recommendations on supplements to use prior to and during the process.

Our clinical rooms are all equipped with air filtration and high-volume extractor fans that filter the air in the room 12 times an hour to eliminate mercury vapor. Our dentists also use an IQ Air Mercury FlexVac air filtration machine with a flexible vacuum arm that captures bacterial aerosols and mercury vapor from the drilling process.

We also offer a close-fitting Oxygen mask over your nose supplying your body with enough oxygen pressure to prevent inhalation of any mercury vapour that comes off the filling during the removal process.

Our dentists also use rubber dams to isolate the tooth from the oral cavity, high-volume suction, and high-speed specialised dental burs that are designed to cause minimal mercury vapor.

Similar to other health procedures the removal of mercury restoration especially large fillings carries risks and precautions. We recommend booking a mercury removal consultation with our dentists to start the process with the appropriate advice.
